Nathan Jonas "Joey" Jordison is an American metal musician. He is best known for his role as the drummer for the band Slipknot. He is also well known as the guitarist for Murderdolls, a glam metal/horror punk band which he founded in the 2000s, that is currently on hiatus due to the Murderdolls' members' main projects.. In 2006, he was the drummer for the industrial metal band Ministry. For the most of 2007, Jordison took over the drumming duties for the nu-metal band Korn before going back to the studio to work on Slipknot's fourth studio album.
[edit] Biography
Nathan Jonas Jordison was born April 26, 1975 in Des Moines, Iowa at the Mercy hospital. Jordison went to Waukee High School in Waukee, Iowa. While in high school, Jordison played drums in the drumline as well as a jazz band. Although before he played drums he played the guitar.
Jordison had worked at a Sinclair gas station in Fresno, Iowa and played in various extreme metal bands from around the Des Moines area, including Modifidious and Anal Blast. Slipknot released an album in 1996 named Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. Only 1000 copies were ever made and sold worldwide. It wasn't until their second album (which was their first record to be released by Roadrunner Records) that they began to garner significant attention, charting at a respectable #51 on the Billboard chart. Jordison, along with his band, played in several Ozzfest tours, headlining the tour in 2001.
Another Slipknot album, "Iowa," was released in 2001. This saw Jordison's band reaching super-stardom, the album debuted in at #1 in the US Billboard charts and number #1 in both the United Kingdom and Canada's national charts. After touring relentlessly, Slipknot went on hiatus.
During this time Jordison remixed "Fight Song" for Marilyn Manson and was also featured in Manson's "Tainted Love" video. In 2002, Jordison, with Wednesday 13 and Tripp Eisen, formed what would become his second most popular band, Murderdolls.
Joey played live with such Rock & Metal bands as Korn, Marilyn Manson, Emperor, Metallica, American Headcharge, Staind, Justice, Satyricon, and 3 Inches of Blood. He performed "unmasked" (i.e. not in his Slipknot persona) with the Murderdolls and added guitar to the album "Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls". He also toured as drummer with Olive on their tourof the USA and UK in 1999. The glam metal/horror punk band, Murderdolls became popular (in the United Kingdom and Japan in particular) before the group went on hiatus in order for Jordison to return to Slipknot. During this time the other members of the Murderdolls worked on their side projects. Meanwhile, his attachment to the Murderdolls seems to have been severed as Wednesday 13, almost having picked up where they left off in regards to Jordison and Eisen, are still functioning.
Since returning to Slipknot, Jordison recorded a fourth album with the group, "Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)", released in 2004. The album climbed to #2 on the Billboard chart, and also reached #1 status in the United Kingdom.
In the summer of 2004 at Download Festival, Lars Ulrich of headliners Metallica was unable to perform with the band. Jordison stepped up and filled in for Ulrich. Joey played most of the set with Metallica. In December of 2004 Joey filled in for drummer Frost of Norwegian black metal band Satyricon for the band's tour of the United States after Frost was unable to get into the country. He also drummed for Ministry on their tour for the Rio Grande Blood album. In May of 2007, while on the road with Korn, Joey filled in for drummer Jon Wysocki of Springfield-based Hard Rock / Alternative Metal Band Staind at a concert in Hartford,CT after Wysocki couldn't make the concert due to family issues. He also played with the band American Head Charge. On April 19, 2007, it was announced that Joey would be touring with Korn for about 5 months while David Silveria was on hiatus from the band.[1] Joey has also now began producing albums, his first being Fire up the Blades by the band 3 Inches of Blood.
Joey accompanied Korn on drums at the 2007 Download Festival. This record-breaking performance was Jordison's fifth Download appearance since its inception in 2003, and marks him as the only artist to play the festival multiple times in four different high-profile bands. Past Download performances include Murderdolls (main stage 2003), Slipknot (main stage 2004 and 2005), a guest appearance with Metallica (main stage 2004) and with Korn (Dimebag Darrell stage 2007).
[edit] Roadrunner United
Recently, Jordison played a big part in the 25-year anniversary of Roadrunner Records, the record label which both of his bands - Slipknot and Murderdolls - are signed onto. Jordison was one of the four "team captains" for the project. His role involved organizing a "core band" of other musicians past and present on the Roadrunner label, and choosing vocalists to sing on his songs. Jordison produced, wrote, and played drums in the songs Annihilation By The Hands Of God (Drums), Tired 'N Lonely (Drums/Bass), No Way Out (Drums/Bass), Constitution Down (Drums) and Enemy Of The State (Drums). (Roadrunner United). It is said that in the first meeting about which musicians on the Roadrunner label to approach for this project, Jordison's was the first name to come up. On the DVD for The All-Star Sessions, Jordison can be seen working on the tracks at SR Studios in Des Moines, Iowa, and is not wearing his famed Slipknot Kabuki mask.
[edit] History behind his mask
There is meaning behind each Slipknot members' mask. They are a reflection of their personalities or a past personal experience. Jordison's Japanese Nō mask reflects a personal experience; when he was younger he came home drunk on Halloween to find his mother sitting in the dimly lit living room wearing that mask. Joey was terrified of the emotionless stare of the mask. In the early days of the Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat album he wore one plain white. For the self-titled album Slipknot, he decorated it with a few stripes and dots of paint. For Iowa he painted fake blood all over his mask, and for vol. 3 he did a variation of designs on it, more notable with claw slashes. He also quotes: "The design enables it to feel however you want it to feel; scary, evil or perverted. All those things held in one mask". He has made about 1000 different styles for his mask. His new mask showed at the Fuse Fangoria Award show is gray with red and black markings.

[edit] Drumset standards
Joey uses a Pearl DR-503 Icon drum rack with straight bars that includes the clamps, memory locks, and the Uni-Lock mounting system.
Joey also uses Remo Emperor/Ambassador/Powerstroke3 drum heads and Ahead Joey 1 Slipknot Signature sticks.
Joey uses Pearl Eliminator pedals. This is evident on Slipknot's "Voliminal: Inside The Nine" DVD and in other drum videos. Quote Pearldrum.com: "I use Pearl Eliminator Pedals and I swear by them." - Joey Jordison.
Pearl Powershifter Eliminator pedals with the red cam and iron cobra wood beaters as seen in Voliminal and the music video for "Before I Forget".
Joey has been seen using a few Meinl Cymbals in the studio, and when playing with Korn before their upcoming tours with Joey in 2007.
Joey sometimes uses Ahead Drumming Gloves to bypass sweat on his hands, which would affect his performance.
